ἑδνόω

ἑδνόω und ἐεδνόω, mit Brautgaben (ἕδνοις) ein Weib versehn, τινά. Bei Homer einmal, im med., Odyss. 2, 53 οἳ πατρὸς μὲν ἐς οἶκον ἀπερρίγασι νέεσϑαι Ἰκαρίου, ὥς κ' αὐτὸς ἐεδνώσαιτο ϑύγατρα, δοίη δ' ᾡ κ' ἐϑέλοι καί οἱ κεχαρισμένος ἔλϑοι: dies kann zweierlei bedeuten, entweder, daß der Vater für seine Tochter ἕδνα von deren Freiern empfangen würde, oder, daß der Vater seiner Tochter aus seinen Mitteln ἕδνα, also eine Aussteuer, eine Mitgift gewähren würde. Letztere Auffassung vertritt ein Scholium zu der Stelle, welches vielleicht aus Aristonicus floß. Vgl. s. v. v. ἕδνον, ἑδνωτής, ἀνάεδνος; Scholl. Herodian. Iliad. 5, 158. 13, 382. – Leon. Tar. 64 (VII, 648) ἑδνώσαιτο γυναῖκα = heirathen. – Das activ. Theocrit. 22, 147 ἁμῖν τοι Λεύκιππος ἑὰς ἕδνωσε ϑύγατρας τάςδε πολὺ προτέροις = verloben. – Adject. verb. bei Hesych., Ἑδνωτήν· ἐγγαμιστἠν νυμφίῳ.
