αἰνέω (αἶνος), Hom. αἴνεε imper. Iliad. 10, 249, αἰνεῖτε imper. 8, 9; fut. αἰνέσω, αἰνήσουσιν Od. 16, 380, Pind. αἰνήσω, doch auch αἰνέσω N. 7, 63, Theocrit. 27, 39 αἰνήσει; aor. ᾔνεσα, Iliad. 24, 30 ᾔνησε, Iliad. 23, 552 Od. 16, 403 αἰνήσωσι (ν); Theocr. 29, 16 αἰνέσαι. Vgl. das dafür in Prosa übliche ἐπαινέω; – gutheißen, συγκατατίϑεσϑαι; loben; absolut Iliad. 8, 9, mitaccus. Iliad. 23. 552, dem νεικέω entgegengesetzt Il. 10, 249. So Pind., Trag. u. Her., im Ggstz von μέμφομαι Soph. Ant. 1142. Bei Aesch. auch = sagen, nennen, Ag. 98. 1461 Ch. 190, dem Soph. Phil. 1366 ὦ δεινὸν αἶνον αἰνέσας nahesteht; loben, anempfehlen, für befehlen, κρύπτειν τάςδε συνϑήκας Ch. 548, φυλάξαι Suppl. 176; aber Pers. 634 δαίμονα ἰόντ' αἰνέσατε = heißt es gut, laßt ihn herausgehen; Eur. αἰνεῖν ξένον προϑυμίας Iph. A. 1381, ihn der Bereitwilligkeit wegen loben; wie Rhian. 11 (App. 72) πάντων; Soph. Phil. 1384 geloben; wie Eur. Alc. 12 Or. 1653; Hes. O. 641 νῆ' ὀλίγην αἰνεῖν, μεγἀλῃ δ' ἐνὶ φορτία ϑέσϑαι, ein kleines Schiff zwar loben, aber ein großes benutzen, d. h. für das kleine danken. Ap. Rh. 2, 898 verb. es mit dem dat. der Person, beipflichten. – In att. Prosa Plat. Rep. III, 404 d Legg. XII, 952 c.
