δήμιος, öffentlich, das Volk, den Staat betreffend, dem Volk angehörend; Gegensatz ἴδιος: Hom. Aeschyl. Sept. 177 ἱερῶν δημίων; Ag. 640 πόλει μὲν ἕλκος ἓν τὸ δήμιον τοχεῖν; Suppl. 370. 699 τὸ δήμιον das Gemeinwesen, der Staat. Die Attische Prosa gebraucht anstatt dieses Homerischen δήμιος lieber das bei Homer noch nicht vorkommende, nicht wie δήμιος von δημος, sondern von δημότης abgeleitete, aus ΔΗΜΟ'ΤΣΙΟΣ entstandene δημόσιος. Doch blieb ὁ δήμιος die allgemein übliche Benennung für den vom Staate bestellten Scharfrichter: Ar. Eccl. 91; Lys. 13, 56; Plat. Legg. IX, 872 b; Sp. oft. – Plat. Rep. IV, 439 e νεκροὺς παρὰ τῷ δημίῳ κειμένους scheint der Richtplatz gemeint zu sein, ist aber l. d. Eustath. Iliad. 17, 250 p. 1105, 22 sagt Σημείωσαι δὲ καὶ ὅτι ἔκπαλαι μὲν οὐ ψεκτὸν ἦν, ὥσπερ οὐδὲ ὁ δῆμος, οὕτως οὐδὲ ὁ δήμιος οὐδὲ τὸ δήμιον, ὡς δῆλον ἔκ τε τῶν δημιοπράτων, ὧν μέμνηται καὶ ὁ κωμικός, καὶ ἐκ τῶν Ὁμηρικῶν δημιοεργῶν. ἐπεὶ δὲ ὕστερον ὁ δήμιος εἰς ἀεικὲς ἀπεκρίϑη πρᾶγμα, κολαστῇ γὰρ ἀνδρὶ ἀποκεκλήρωται τοὔνομα, ἤργησε μὲν ἡ χρῆσις τοῦ παλαιοῦ δημίου, ἐκαινίσϑη δὲ ἀντ' αὐτοῠ ὁ δημόσιος. Dabei ist zu erinnern, daß Attisch der Scharfrichter auch δημόσιος hieß, s. s. v. δημόσιος. – Das femin. δημίῆ bezeichnete bei den Kypriern nach Hesych. eine öffentliche Hure.
